These no-bake Oreo balls are the kind of decadent treat that disappears the second you set them down. They’re rich and chocolatey, made with just 5 simple ingredients (including cottage cheese!) and perfect for the holidays.

I usually lean toward lighter holiday treats, but this year I was craving something a little more decadent. Enter these Oreo balls, also known as Oreo truffles.

Platter of Oreo truffles topped with chocolate drizzle and Oreo crumbs.

I did give them a tiny EBF twist by swapping in cottage cheese for half of the cream cheese, which adds a little protein and a slightly lighter touch, but don’t worry… they still taste like the full-on real deal. One bite and you’ll see why these disappear fast at any holiday party or family gathering.

  • Oreos – the star of the show! You can go with real deal Oreo cookies or a slightly better-for-you version, such as Catalina Crunch chocolate vanilla sandwich cookies or Back to Nature classic creme sandwich cookies.
  • cream cheese – softened to room temp so it mixes smoothly. Gives the truffles that classic creamy texture.
  • cottage cheese – this replaces some of the cream cheese adding a little protein and lightening things up while still keeping the filling rich and smooth.
  • chocolate – white, milk or dark chocolate all work great for dipping. Use your favorite.
  • coconut oil – helps the chocolate melt smoothly and gives you that pretty, glossy finish.

How to Make Oreo Truffles

Finely crushed Oreo cookie crumbs pulsed in a food processor for Oreo balls.

Step 1: Add the cookies to a food processor and pulse until they turn into fine crumbs.

Step 3: Blend again until a dough starts to form. You want the mixture thick, smooth and fully combined.

Step 4: Scoop the mixture with a small cookie scoop and roll into bite-sized balls. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and place in the fridge or freezer for a bit so the balls firm up and are easier to dip.

Step 5: Warm your chocolate with a little coconut oil either in the microwave or using a double boiler. Use a fork to dip each chilled ball into the melted chocolate, tapping off any excess.

Step 6: Place the truffles back on the tray and add sprinkles, chocolate drizzles or Oreo crumbs before the chocolate sets.

Tips For The Best Oreo Balls

  • Soften your cream cheese: Let it sit at room temp so it blends smoothly with the cottage cheese and Oreo crumbs.
  • Chill before dipping: Cold, firm Oreo balls are much easier to coat in chocolate without losing their shape.
  • Use good-quality chocolate: It melts smoother and gives you a prettier, more even coating.
  • Work in batches: Keep half the balls in the fridge while dipping the others so they stay firm.
  • Decorate right away: Sprinkles, Oreo crumbs and drizzles stick best while the chocolate is still wet.

How to Store

  • In the fridge: Keep your Oreo balls in an airtight container for up to 1 week. They taste best chilled and the texture stays perfectly creamy.
  • In the freezer: Freeze in a single layer, then transfer to a storage bag or container. They’ll keep for about 2 months. Thaw in the fridge before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip the cottage cheese?

You can. Just replace the cottage cheese with the same amount of cream cheese. The filling will be a little richer and thicker.

Do I have to chill the Oreo balls before dipping?

Yes, chilling is key. It firms up the balls so they hold their shape when dipped in warm chocolate.

What’s the best chocolate to use?

White, milk or dark chocolate all work well. Higher-quality chocolate melts smoother and gives you a cleaner coating.

Why is my melted chocolate too thick?

If you skipped the coconut oil your chocolate could turn out too thick. Add a small splash of coconut oil to thin it out and make dipping easier.

Can I make Oreo balls ahead of time?

Definitely. They stay fresh in the fridge for up to a week and freeze well, so they’re great for prepping before holidays or parties.
